Here and there.

I've been sick for almost a week now with some kind of flu/cold and every day is different. The first day it was the body aches, days two-three it was the nasty sore throat, four & five were non-stop nose blowing and today.. it's a little bit of everything. I guess that's what I get for working with kids.. and filling my schedule to the brim.

So from now until June, expect to see everything dance related. Here, on instagram, etc. There are many things I love about this crazy time of year. The excitement over costumes, seeing how hard the students work before their performances, planning routines, making hairpieces, spending entire weekends (literally) at competitions.. mmm sometimes not so much. But if I had no choice but to be trapped in a high school auditorium, going days without seeing the sun, I wouldn't ever pick a different bunch to be there with.

It is the busiest time of year for us dance teachers and I'm sure most of them would agree, that the day after their last recital is relaxing, yet oddly the most depressing day of the year. Extreme performance high to seriously boring low. My mind and body go into shock because for the last six months it was "sew that, glue this, do that dance again, pointe your foot.. your whole foot, pick this up, drop that off there, write that down, lists, lists, lists, programs, go, stop, dance, drive, backstage, dressing room, you forgot your prop, WHERE'S YOUR HAIRPIECE?? ..."

you get the point..

So buckle up and prepare yourself for my crazy speratic posts about dance teacher nightmares, costumes, glitter explostions and sewing disasters.

Oh wait.. am I already doing that?

Thought so..

How flippin' amazing is that?! I can't stop watching it and have been showing e v e r y o n e.. including the kitty. She started taking lessons in backwards fabric dancing cause she was so inspired.

I hope you all enjoy your weekend. I know that I've got a long one ahead of me with performing, rehearsing with my students, packing for my trip (!!!) and other miscellaneous things.

Dancers: Remember..

9.25.2012

Photobucket
1. Nothing comes easy. Dance is hard. Life is hard. All great performers, teachers and dancers have worked hard to accomplish great things. Just because you can't do a certain step, doesn't mean you never will. Never stop trying. Just because one dance company doesn't accept you, doesn't mean another one won't. It's going to be difficult, you're going to be frustrated, but that's why you have dance teachers. To encourage, guide and support you.

2. You get out of it what you put into it. Plain and simple.

3. Your parents (or maybe you) actually pay for dance classes. Try to think about that when you're chatting on the side or being lazy in class because "you're tired". There are lots of children in the world who would be incredibly happy to have this opportunity, so treat it as though it is a privilege. And thank your parents often.

4. Dance is selfish. But that doesn't mean dancers are. We dance because it makes us feel something. We don't do it for anyone but ourselves. I dance because I get to be in peaceful and beautiful state of mind. One that I can't be in any other time of the day. When you're in class, worry about yourself. All of your focus should be on you. Dancers need to work as a team on many occasions, but they also need to focus on how to make themselves better instead of being intimated, jealous or pointing out the flaws of others. Jealousy divides the team and it is visible both on and off the stage. Strong, confident dancers make for a strong and confident team.

5. We say this a thousand times: The way you dance in class is the way you'll dance on stage. So always do it full out. Focus on your energy and the intention of the piece. Because everyone wants to be the best they can be on that stage. You may feel silly smiling at yourself in the mirror or whatever, but shouldn't you be enjoying yourself anyway?! That should be the easy part.

6. Dance teachers actually know what they are doing. Each dancer should take the critics and apply them, whether they were said to another student or to the entire class. You should always be working and striving to be the best, so always be listening and watching. It will only make you that much better.

7. Always be thinking about what's next. If you are given a combination across the floor traveling to the right, you'll most likely have to do it to the left. When you finish, start reversing it in your head instead of just waiting till it's your turn and then trying to figure it out. It's great for your brain and will strengthen your ability to pick up choreography faster.

8. Be respectful. Of your instructor, your peers and yourself. Keep talking to a minimum, avoid whispering or judging of others and always give it 110%. Anything else is a waste of everyone's time.

9. Keeping learning. Even if you've mastered all that you think you are capable of. Cause guess what? You haven't. So go beyond your limits. Push yourself. Start learning a different style, take class from different instructors and pay attention to your peers. There are so many opportunities out there. A dancer never stops learning, ever ever ever, so be adventurous.

10. Be kind to yourself. Having the motivation to push yourself is a great quality and it will get you far, but don't overdo it. Dance doesn't just happen, so take a deep breath and try not to get discouraged. The harder the step or trick, the more time it will take, so be patient and when you reach that goal, give yourself some recognition.

Dancing // Boston

I spent this weekend in Boston with Eclipse dance company. We had the wonderful opportunity to perform in the middle of Boston's theater district (holy cow!) along side a group of amazing contemporary dance companies from all over the United States. I am feeling very blessed. And extremely tired.

Read more about the event here!

See ya!

In just a couple hours, I'll be headed to Boston for three days. Our dance company is performing in the Boston Contemporary Dance Festival, so if you're in the area you should come! I'm so excited to be performing alongside some amazing artists and even catching up with some long lost friends!

Have a great weekend everyone. I'll be back sometime next week to tell you all about it!

Dancing makes you smarter

A couple of months ago, my boyfriend's sister sent us this article. Whether you have two left feet or frequently practice your moves in the kitchen, I think it's worth the read. And if you are not a dancer, maybe it will encourage you to take a class or two. It might do the trick and convince you (and everyone else in the entire universe) what us dancers already know: that dance is amazingly good for you. Mind, body + soul kind of good for you.

Your welcome.

Jams

7.11.2012

I have a problem. With 900 + songs on my iPod, I am bored. How is that possible? I skip seventy percent of the songs that the shuffle plays. What's wrong with me? Does anyone else have this problem? I can't seem to find fresh enough music for my hard to please self. Or maybe it is just because I don't have the patience to look for it. Whatever the reason, I am dead tired of all my music. To the point where I'd rather listen to my own thoughts than the radio, my iPod or a CD. I know, it is a pretty desperate state over here people. BUT THIS! This playlist - no matter how random the selection may be (please don't laugh) - will always put a smile on face.

They are my jams.
(I don't know, maybe they'll turn into yours too!)

The beautiful lillies that I am so fortunate to have all over the yard. The bright orange can always make me smile. Even on the rainiest of days. (No filter or edits.)

Phew. Two tech rehearsals and three performances in two days and in two different cities. Going against my body's better judgement, I'm awake and acknowledging the week ahead. Yesterday while driving to Boston, D asked me about plans for the upcoming week and weekend. I responded with something like, "Honestly, I'm just trying to live to see Monday. The calendar doesn't exist to me past June 24th."  The dance hangover is in affect now. The stiff muscles and haziness has settled in. And to make matters worse the coffee pot broke this morning. Thank you universe. The one day that I truly need some caffeine, you take it away from me. Gahh.

I'm hoping to take today to regroup, catch-up on my regular weekend chores that were ignored and maybe do something for myself. Ever feel like you need a weekend for your weekend?!

Monday Giveaway!

6.11.2012

Hello friends. Happy Monday.

I don't know about you but this weekend seriously kicked my butt. Yesterday was our end of the year recital for the dance school. Trying to think about the two days I spent there is a bit overwhelming now. It's hard to separate everything into neat piles. My brain just becomes a swirling blurry mess of sequins, makeup, tears, tutus and lots of happy faces. There is no better feeling than watching my students dance on stage. The bright smiles they show off. The endless hugs after they perform. Those two things make all the stress and hours of rehearsal totally worthwhile.

But enough about me. Today is about you. Because you could win some really amazing things. Like a pair of earrings (Handmade by Nicole), custom business cards, an amazon gift card, store credit to some lovely shops and much more! The winner takes all! Over $200 in prizes! So get your behinds over to Daryl's blog and enter! Good luck!

dear monday//thanks for being somewhat kind to me thus far. After this weekend, it was nice of you to let me sleep just a little bit longer than usual.

dear kitty cat//thank you for being cute and cuddly in the early morning hours. The head butting my hand till I pet you routine never gets old. And also - thanks for helping me with work.
p.s. if you're going to catch a mouse and bring it upstairs at 4am, could you at least kill it?

dear boyfriend//I love when you tell me how pretty I look when I'm dancing on stage. I love the kisses on my forehead early in the morning and the way you fluff my pillow when I'm too tired to function.

dear fellow bloggers//thanks for doing things like this.

dear lavender soap//I need you in my life.. forever and always.

dear students//you make me so proud and I can't even explain. This weekend was magical. You are passionate, beautiful and individually special to me. Watching you dance gives me the proud mama feeling every time. I love you.

Weekend Inspiration

5.18.2012

>> I'll be off dancing all weekend so it is totally fitting that I post this today <<

There is an infinite number beautiful and magical things here that make me appreciative for movement and how we are able to connect with people without using words. There is something about being in that moment that captivates you and forces you to think deeper about life, people and most importantly, who you are. I've watched this over and over and every time I'm more inspired to reach beyond my simple self. I hope that you're inspired to dig deeper too.

hey!

Come to our dance company's annual performance! It's this Sunday. And it will be amazing. Because we don't do anything less. If you're in the Western Mass area please come and support our company -- click here for more info & tickets!

Have a splendid Tuesday everyone.

My new favorite

>> The upside-down french braid <<

I saw someone who had a similar hairstyle this weekend and I fell in love. It's perfect for my short hair. I always have a problem when I put my hair in a ponytail or bun because hairs that are too short just fall and I have to pin them up with a thousand bobby pins. So annoying.
But not anymore! What do you think?!

I hope you all had fabulous weekends. I spent my at a dance competition ( had to get up at 5:00am on my Birthday! ), went to my parents for dinner and ice cream cake, was surprised by  my best friend and her fiance who showed up to celebrate with me, and attempted to catch up on sleep. It was a long and exhausting weekend and I'm kind of hating Monday right now, but I am so thankful for all my birthday wishes and extremely proud of my dancers.

Perfectly Perfect

One of my most favoritest scenes from Singing In The Rain. Couldn't be more perfect for this rainy Sunday.

How to teach a complete stranger to dance

4.19.2012

Last Friday, a few of our dancers performed at a Falcons Hockey game. I choreographed a short number (to be performed in a 15 ft x 15 ft concrete area.. eek.) and the girls danced between the periods while people replenished their beer and grabbed hot dogs. I was a little nervous about it since we were newbies to the event, but it was pretty entertaining. And you're about to see what I mean.

Side note:
-- we were set up across from a food stand; this is one of their employees.
-- this was not when people we actually watching us. A few of them just wanted to practice instead of watching the game. Those are my girls!

Scenes from the weekend

4.02.2012

Most All of my weekend was spent at our first dance competition of the season. I couldn't have been more proud of my students. They did a fabulous job but more importantly, they enjoyed themselves and showed so much love and enthusiasm for what they do up on that stage. And that's really what its about..

Other than that, I spent every spare second that I had playing with the baby chicks. They are growing quickly and becoming more friendly with us. I've found ways to trick them into coming into my hand. Like putting their food in the palm of my hand. For whatever reason, they go completely bananas over it. It's the same food that is in their box, yet for some reason they act like they've been starved for the entire week of their lives.

And now for a busy week ahead. Momma's birthday is Friday, so I've got a little planning to do. The opening of mormor is on Saturday (!!!!) and I've got lots of caring and prepping to do for my little ones. This morning, we were joking about how Dana lives in a house with eight ladies. Lucky him.

Enjoy your Monday everyone.

A look inside

3.26.2012

Well friends, big things are happening!

This photo was taken on Friday after I set up all of my jewelry in the handmade and vintage goods shop, Mormor. In less than two weeks visitors will be able to purchase my earrings and bracelets! This crazy and somewhat farfetched dream that I had a couple years ago, is actually about to become reality. I couldn't be happier and more thankful for this opportunity. Please visit Carrie and the Mormor website to learn more about all of the wonderful and talented artists that have work in her shop. It's so spectacular and sweet of her to dedicate an entire space to artists of Western Mass. Also, she makes some fabulous hand bags! I know that I will spend a great deal of time shopping in there. So many wonderful and beautifully made things that I want need. Photo credit: Carrie Keefe

Also! This weekend is our very first dance competition of the season. I'm biting my nails over here. It's the first time that I have ever had my choreography in a competition. I also have two groups of competition newbies. All under the age of twelve. It's an overwhelming experience to say the least. Especially for the dancers who know nothing about how a competition works. Aside from what they see on the-show-that-shall-not-be-named. And of course all of my newbie competition girls watch it. It's sad because they all think they know what competition is like but let's be real here.. It's. Nothing. Like. That. Ridiculous. Show.

I'm just praying that they have a wonderful time on stage and stay calm. Because I know that I'll be a nervous wreck inside and I'm not sure how I would be able to deal with eight children freak-outs and along with my own. Cross your fingers that we all keep it together!

Enjoy your Monday loves.

If you wonder why..

3.15.2012

If you ever wonder why I dance, it is because I experience something like this.
Feeling this way is an addiction.
It is gorgeous.
And for a moment, I'm untouchable.

"life is a maze & love is a riddle"

2.22.2012

I heard this song on pandora earlier today. As soon as it got to the chorus, I was convinced that it would be perfect for a jazz routine. What do you think?
I'm in love with the lyrics. Very true to life. In a cute and fun way that people can relate to. I love songs like that.
Too bad I already have all my recital and competition music picked out. However, it's never too early to start making decisions about next year, right?!
